The Carol's Convertible Purse Pattern by Laura Martell of The Creative Thimble includes sewing instructions and templates for creating a shoulder bag that instantly turns into a backpack by pulling on the side handle straps. It has a magnetic snap closure, two front pockets and a back zipper pocket.  Inside there is another zippered pocket and a patch pocket. You get two purses in one. I love the backpack when I am grocery and mall shopping because it allows me to shop hands free. Templates for purse corners, flap closure, and purse tote edge are included.

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric Option 1: Coordinating quilting-weight cotton fabrics interfaced with Decor Bond interfacing.  2 fabrics - 1/2 yd or Fabric A and 3/4 yd for Fabric B.  Fabric B includes 1/4 yd for handles. 5/8 yd lining fabric. 1 1/4 yd Decor Bond by Pellon interfacing.
  • Fabric Option 2 - Double-sided pre-quilted fabric for the outside and quilting-weight interfaced with cotton for the lining. (Purse will be softer)
  • Pre-Quilted Fabric - 5/8 yd pre-quilted. 5/8 yd coordinating non-quilted for handles, facings, and pockets (includes 1/4 yd for handles). 5/8 yd non-quilted for the lining. 3/4 yd Decor Bond by Pellon for interfacing.
  • Patchwork Bag - 6 fabrics on the outside of your purse
  • 7 fat quarters for purse and lining
  • Handles - 1/4 yd (9" x 42") - a fat quarter will have to be pieced.
  • Notions: Optional - webbing for the handles instead of fabric - 2 1/4 yd.
  • (3) 1" or 1 1/4" D rings or rectangle rings
  • 3/4" magnetic snap closure
  • 9" zipper to match fabric
  • 7" zipper to match lining
