The Sonja Backpack-to-Bag Pattern by Hemma Design is a lined backpack that converts to a cross-body bag easily by re-tying the shoulder straps!  Us your imagination and choose from a foundation pieced or color-blocked option to make your own unique bag. Finished size about 10 1/4 x 11 x 4 1/2 without gussets. Includes instructions, diagrams, and tissue paper patterns.

Materials Needed: Fabric - 44" wide

  • Main fabric A - 1 and 1/8 yards
  • Lining and contrast fabric B - 5/8 yard
  • Bias binding and gusset fabric C - 7/8 yard
  • Interfacing 44" wide - fusible fleece 7/8 yard OR thick bag interfacing such as Annie's Soft & Stable (18" x 58")
  • 20" wide fusible lightweight or midweight interfacing - 7/8 yard
  • Hardware & Trims:
  • (1) 24" separating or non-separating zipper
  • (1) 9" polyester zipper for lining
  • (2) 3/4" magnetic snaps
  • (2) 1" D-rings
  • (1) 1" to 1 and 1/4" button
  • 3/8" grosgrain ribbon - 1/4 yard
  • Pieced Backpack:
  • 44" wide fabric
  • Muslin or white fabric for foundation - 1/3 yard
  • Additional 1 to 3 fabrics for piecing - 1/4 yard each
  • Rotary cutter & cutting mat
  • clear gridded ruler
  • removable fabric pen or pencil
  • Color-Blocked Backpack
  • Trim - 3/4" to 1" wide ribbon - 1/2 yard
